And always remember to consistently practice your percussion techniques.
1). Listen to all styles of music, even if it is not your favorite. Playing stylistically does not require you to master the style; you just have to understand what you are playing.
2). Learn all 40 of the International Drum Rudiments. Then experiment with some of the Hybrids. Applying rudiments to your set playing can create some interesting musical phrases.
3). Learn how to play Jazz! “If I could do it all over I would have started there”.
Jazz is the gateway to 4 limb independence.
4). Warm up before you play. Try to develop exercises that warm up both hands and feet. “Your gig starts from the first note of your warm up”.
- JoJo Mayer
5). When playing "match grip” you want to keep your palm face down with your thumb on the side of the stick. Keeping your forearms and wrist parallel with the floor will maximize full range of motion.
